I have just finished some animated panels for Skype at Albion London. These are currently being shown across airports in the UK, so keep an eye out.

A pure Lomo LCA effect for photoshop.

I have long been a fan of the Lomo LCA and use one regularly. I am not so interested in the cross-processed look, but rather the raw output from the camera, untouched.

These days I have a Canon G9 in my bag. It has features similar to that of a Lomo (depth focus etc) and this makes it an ideal Lomo LCA fraudster. I have therefore created a LOMO LCA effect in photoshop to make the G9 output look like raw shots. I may improve upon the file when I get time, however I’m fairly happy with the results and find it hard to tell the difference in comparison to my original lCA shots.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE.

Place your picture on the bottom layer (I have included and example)
Add a bit of Gaussian Blur (I recommend about 1.5) to your picture. Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

Animation stills

i am currently working on an animation using After Effects and my original illustrations. The character you see here has been rigged in AE, has multiple outfits, facial expression and a flexible body. The hard work of animation begins now.

Asda Magazine

ASDA Magazine has recently been voted the 4th in the top 100 magazines printed in the UK by ABC, wth a 2,805,052 readership. Publicis BluePrint brought me in as lead digital creative to add something extra to the online ASDA MAGAZINE for September, whilst keeping the editorial look. I have really been working hard to make each page to individually standout. I have also written the actionscript for each page.

Flash 10 Audio API

I was excited to read on Lee’s blog that Flash 10 has a dynamic audio API. This means that there will be a facility in Flash to create bespoke audio instrumentation. I have been waiting for this for a while, as I simply don’t have enough time to get to grips with SuperCollider or the likes of PD.

“In the first beta you could dynamically generate audio using the new samples callback function. You can check out the tutorial that I did at gotoAndLearn() for more information on this. I will update this as soon as I know more.”

Mexican Wave Facebook App

I spent a month and half at Albion working as lead digital designer on The World’d Largest Mexican Wave. My role was interface design, After Effects creative lead and working on the technical side of how it would work (in collaboration with Tech Enlightenment).

The app has been a success and with over 4 thousand faces added to the app.

Special thanks goes to Andy for helping me export all the shirts from After Effects and also to Aaron for creative direction. Also shouts out to those who withstood the production tests, wearing shirts covered in black sticky tape!

Korg ER 1 review

Korg ER 1 review from Studio nini on Vimeo

I recently bought a retro Korg Er1 Drum machine. Kana wanted to test her new camera, so we did a short unrehearsed documentary.

Here comes trouble!

I have been working on a facebook app for the last few weeks and it’s been quite a process working out how to colour the shirts (208 teams). I found a perfect way though using after effects and filming using white shirts /black gloves (white tints the best). I then cut out the characters and overlayed the .ai patterns.

I then got the old displacment effect out and keyed the shirts to move when the arms are raised. Worked out alright as you can see from the army of crazed waivers in the clip.

N.B. The scarfs, hats and faces can be replaced in the app.

Font love

This week i have been dreaming about Galaxie Cassiopeia from Village. Ahh I want this font ! It’s lovely in its cursive version, I think I’m going to buy it.

Norshteyn & Yamamura

I quite a lot of my (free) time trawling through YouTube for animation. So i thought I would share links to two of my favourite animations.

The first is Yuriy Norshteyn’s Hedgehog in Fog and the second is Koji Yamamura’s Atama Yama (Mountain head). Both these animations have real philosophical depth and artistic uniqueness.

Here is my Youtube Playlist if want to see some more.
